imposter!

I love kale. It's trendy, it's versatile, it's nutritious, and it's ridiculously easy to grow. So when last year's crop finally went to flower in the early spring I didn't fret, I just pulled it out and planted new seed. I didn't even bother gathering my own seeds because I had some (plenty) from packages. Easy.

I'll admit, I was excited when they sprouted quickly and pretty soon I had what appeared to be a kale forest! An enchanted kale forest just waiting for a fresh-kale-for-dinner whim to hit. As it did tonight.

So Dinner-Making Son went out to gather, but came in a bit confused and asked what KIND of kale I had planted. Not only were the leaves kind of odd looking, they were prickly..., really prickly.

and, not even remotely like the picture on the seed packet said they should be.

I have no idea what happened or what it is I have here but I for one don't want to eat it. This weekend's do-over project is to replant kale. Real kale.

I have no idea what that disappointing plant might be, but I do know an amazing book for your nightstand: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

    1. Solved! by Brilliant Daughter and a botany app... (because there's an app for everything). Apparently this is Siberian Kale, and was rescued before I demolished it... and made perfectly acceptable kale chips for dinner.
Thank you for the book recommendation... Currently reading The Good Gut in the hopes of solving some tummy issues, but will put your book on the "to-read" list for sure!

Bio-K is a great "gut issue resolver" too. I use it after taking antibiotics - especially the kind they give you through IV as they are really heavy duty and they only give you four doses of it as they are so potent. Bio-k helps put your gut flora back into balance. Anyway, for what ever it is worth.

Glad you got your kale issue sorted out. Brilliant Daughter is a genius, but I could have told you that when I met her as an infant.
