an island in the city

Barnston Island is an odd little place, in the middle of everything and yet out of the way all at the same time. It takes a ferry to get there but it's free and there's no real schedule apart from the first sailing and the last; it just loads, crosses, unloads and repeats over and over and over. Taking a car over is discouraged really, so most people go across to bike around the perimeter road. We were a bit of an anomaly as we chose to walk it -- about 12 km long including little detours for views of the water. It's a little pocket of agricultural land within view of major highways and urban development and it was a lovely way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I'm just sorry it has taken us so long to discover it.
