two cords

Ever wondered what two cords of wood looks like?
No?
Yeah, me neither. Until last week when we had just that amount delivered!

It also looks like this...

I like that picture because it also features our fancy ghetto-blaster holder (aka the Kaboda tractor bucket) and our furry supervisor of course.

Technically, a cord of wood is 4ft X 4ft X 8ft and two is what fits in the dumper trailer that delivered it all. This was as far into the shed it could go which is why in the photo above it looks like the shed is vomitting logs into the driveway.

From there, we stacked it, 10 feet wide and head high. It's a mix of Birch and Pine; look closely to see the blue staining on the pine -- it's caused by a fungus introduced by the Mountain Pine Beetle.

Some of the pieces needed further splitting, so we set those aside to deal with later:

Of course a shed full of wood is only so useful -- it needs to make its way inside somehow -- and this is how we do it...

We load the tractor bucket, drive over to the porch stairs, transfer the wood to a wheelbarrow, wheel that over to the storage container conveniently located near the sliding doors to the room where the wood stove is. Phew! It's a process! And this is why we aren't mising our gym memberships these days.

Our plan going forward is to collect our own wood -- and we've done some of that already -- but it was good to get a bit of a stash delivered. We did the math -- it takes about 1 square foot of wood to fill the stove, which in winter is done twice daily. Which means 2 cords is about 3 months' of winter heating. So, if all we get is three months of winter we're set!

  1. So based on this year, as long as winter starts in February, you are all set!

That's a lot of wood. A cord is a well stacked compact rack of wood measuring4' x 4' x 8'. And you've got two of them!

    1. It seems like a lot! But as we're still using the stove, every two days or so now, it's not going to laaaaast!
